After witnessing the staining abilities of the famous Texas Red Dirt in every white pair of sneakers I've ever owned, I decided to try my hand at creating some pretty non-traditional mud cloth. My process was purely experimental and executed with very little research but it yielded some lovely results that I am impressed with.
This red clay-based earth was gathered near Sweetwater Texas on the side of the highway. I decide to work with this wonderfully warm, heavily pigmented earth in this attempt.
I mixed the 'Red Dirt' with rainwater and saturated a large piece of cotton fabric into the mud before sealing up the whole mixture in a bucket with a plastic bag over it. I allowed this to sit in the hot sun for 3 days and 3 nights before I removed and the fabric and rinsed with cool water.
After drying the, the ancient sunbaked warmth of the red dirt radiated from the fabric!
